1924 AC Royal 11.9 two seat Tourer with Dickey Seat
AC had existed from 1907 as manufacturers of three-wheel trades vehicles before moving to produce more conventional vehicles just prior to the Great War. The company name changed to AC Cars Ltd in 1922, by which time they had some 900 employees. Their 11.9 hp ‘Royal’ model was introduced at this time which proved to be very popular, offering quality and good performance together with a most pleasing appearance.
Originally supplied by Onchan Motors of Douglas, Isle of Man and first registered as MN 3513 in October 1924, with the suppliers' brass plaque still evident on the dashboard. It returned to the mainland in 1962 when it was re-registered as XFR 513 documented with the original logbook, before passing through several owners and eventually settling in a private collection in Yorkshire.
In 2014 it left the collection and had time and money spent returning it from museum piece to road use. This included an engine rebuild with many new parts (pistons, clutch, timing chains, exhaust etc) and the crank assembly being balanced, resulting in a smooth engine.
The bodywork was repainted from maroon to beige and brown before it entered the Yorkshire Car Collection, but remains in good condition, the benefit of having seen minimal use.
The carpets have been replaced, as well as the hood being reconditioned. The interior is mellow and sound, the bench seat proving comfortable when driving, comfort, with the dickey seat at the rear providing additional accommodation or luggage space.
Whilst in the current ownership an electric fan was fitted for modern traffic conditions and oil has been changed regularly.
It has competed in the Bicester and Brooklands driving tests in the Cyclecars, Oddities and Light Car and Edwardian Section, before comfortably travelling around Wales on the LCES Welsh weekend.
A large file of paperwork is supplied with the car which includes the RF60 buff logbook from 1962, plus later Registration Documents, along with copies of the instruction manual and a period road test of this model dating from 1922. A current VSCC Buff Form is also provided. A most characterful Vintage light car, ready for any challenge!
