1928 Austin 16/6 Five Seat Tourer - Holden Coachwork
The larger Austin motor cars of the 1920s were noted for their reliability and rugged strength and it was these features that made them popular in the Antipodes, where often the roads were poor and conditions very demanding.
Delivered new to Austin Distributors in Melbourne in chassis form, this 1928 Austin 16/6 was bodied by Holden with touring coachwork and purchased by its first owner in November of that year.
Clearly he was very happy with his car as he was to retain it for the next 49 years, before the car was to pass to its second owner, Douglas Gore of Terang who acquired it in March 1977.
During the 1980’s an extensive restoration was undertaken by Mr Gore, which included the car being painted in its original livery of Austin Kingfisher Blue. All running gear, mechanicals and chassis were rebuilt and the car returned to the road in its former glory.
In 2005 the Austin was to return to the UK and was to pass into the hands of the current owner. Known as ‘Matilda’ the car is in good, sound order and pleasantly aged since the restoration. The 2 1/4 litre six cylinder engine runs smoothly and on the road the Austin gets into her stride well, making light work of hills.
The hood and side screens are in good order and there is a large amount of paperwork and photos accompanying this characterful Vintage Austin, which has had very few owners in her 91 years.
