1931 Alvis 12/50 TJ Beetleback Sports

Introduced in 1923, the Alvis 12/50 has always enjoyed a loyal following and, as a result, benefits from a good survival rate and excellent club support.

During 1929, Alvis ceased production of the 12/50 in order to concentrate on their front wheel drive model. However, this did not achieve the anticipated success and the well-established 12/50 was revised and reintroduced in September 1930. Designated ‘TJ’ Series, this model was available in saloon, tourer and two-seater with dickey seat variants. Changes to the design included a taller radiator, modifications to the chassis and coil ignition was now standardised, although it was possible to specify a magneto if required. The TJ was followed by the ‘TK’ and ‘TL’ models before production ceased in 1932 and the ‘Firefly’ was introduced.

Presented here for sale is a 1931 ‘TJ’ Series which was rebodied as a Beetleback with the work carried out to a very high standard with all new ash frame and panels. We understand that major mechanical components were also rebuilt with work completed around 8-10 years ago and only a small mileage has been covered subsequently.

During the past month the car has undergone a thorough checkover by a well-regarded Alvis specialist and comes to us ready for action. The hood is also a recent fitment and there are numerous bills and photos supplied of the rebuild in progress. Also supplied is a copy of The Vintage Alvis Manual and an original Drivers’ Handbook.

In summary, a most attractive sporting Alvis that is certain to prove a delight to its next custodian.
