One of the most sought after and highly regarded British motor cars from the immediate post vintage period is the Alvis Speed 20.
Making its debut late in 1931, the Speed 20 was powered by a much-modified version of the engine from the previous Silver Eagle models. In this guise the engine developed 87 bhp breathing through 3 SU HV4 carburettors. As had become established Alvis practice, the engine sat on flexible rubber mountings to ensure smoothness, whilst the chassis was a ‘double drop’ type and a centralised lubrication system was included in the comprehensive specification.
A variety of coachwork styles were offered including a 4-door sports saloon by Charlesworth and a sleek 4 door tourer crafted by Cross & Ellis.
The motor car we offer for sale here is of 1932 manufacture with Cross & Ellis Tourer coachwork. Having been restored to an extremely high standard several years ago, the car achieved Concours awards twice in the USA during the 1990s as well additional awards in more recent times awarded in the UK.
Carefully maintained and proven by some 8,000 reliable touring miles in the current ownership both at home and on the Continent – this motor car as the advantage of being fitted with the SB fully synchromesh gearbox which makes for effortless gear changing and enhances the driving experience.
A particularly welcome and desirable feature of this motor car is the spacious luggage boot – this having been added by Cross & Ellis during the 1930s to enable long distance comfortable touring with dry enclosed luggage rather than, what was the norm, of suitcases being carried outside on a rack exposed to the elements.
The handsome lines of this car are highlighted by the most attractive duo tone grey paintwork with superb red leather interior trim.
A substantial history of the car – carefully researched by the current owner is presented and includes photographs of the car in the 1930s, together with a vast quantity of invoices attesting to a ‘no expense spared’ maintenance history. The car was reunited with its original registration number has its build sheet. Also included are rare and original instruction books along with useful notes for the new custodian.
The weather equipment is all in excellent order and fits snugly. The car also comes with two additional ‘reclining’ seats finished in red leather as an alternative fitment should they be required for comfort during longer journeys.
The car also benefits from all the modern essentials of life such as flashing indicators, satnav power point, all fitted with a modern fuse box and discretely hidden.
In summary, this is an extremely good example of this desirable Alvis.
