1932 MG J1 Four Seat Sports Tourer - Full Body, Chassis & Mechanical Restoration

The ‘J’ Series Midget made its debut in 1932 as the replacement for the ‘M’ Type. A two seater designated ‘J2’ and the ‘J1’, which was available as a four seat sports tourer or a ‘Salonette’.

The four seat model was priced at £220, making it very good value and an ideal car for the enthusiast with a small family.

This example, chassis number J0346, was built at Abingdon in October 1932 and supplied to a Mr F B Hawley of Shipley in June 1933 and registered with the Leeds index number UG 5221, which it still retains. Almost immediately Fred Hawley entered the car in the Abingdon to Abingdon Trial, gaining a second class award according to Motor Sport Archives and subsequently requiring a new engine, which the MG Car Company supplied, subject to a payment of 6d per hour labour charge!

The car languished for some while in later times, the present owner acquiring and embarking upon a full body, chassis and mechanical restoration in 2012.

The engine was fitted with a counterbalanced Phoenix crank with shell bearings.

LEDv headlamps and indicators and a Satnav ball mounting complete the practicalities to ensure this delightful small MG is very useable. Wheels and leather trim in Suede Grey complement the Oxford Blue bodywork for a most appealing appearance.

The J1 is quite a rare MG, the four seat tourer being seen as quite old fashioned at the time and, of course, the two seat J2 was a far more familiar sight on the roads. Interestingly, the J1 offered nearly the same power as the six cylinder F1 Magna and shared the same body, yet weighed 100 kg less.

This particular car is one of perhaps only three J1 tourers in original configuration currently on the road in the UK. It is presented in excellent order throughout and a new hood will be fitted prior to the car passing to a new owner. A rare opportunity and a charming car which benefits from excellent club support from the MGCC and the Octagon Car Club.

Paperwork provided includes the correct Instruction Manual, copies of letters from The MG Car Company dating back to 1933, plus an original ‘Instruction Summary’ publication for the J Series models.
