1932 MG J2 Midget
Making its debut in August 1932, the MG J2 Midget was developed from the competition-inspired C-Type and quickly established the style that would define small British sports cars for many years to come. With its cutaway doors, slab-type fuel tank and purposeful appearance, the J2 remains one of the most recognisable of the pre-war MG Midgets.
A total of 2,083 J2s were built between 1932 and 1934. The two-seater was designated J2, whilst the four-seat version was known as the J1.
Although just 847cc, its overhead-camshaft engine produced some 36 bhp, giving the lightweight MG lively performance and a maximum speed of around 65 to 70 mph.
The J2 we offer here was first registered in London in September 1932 and retains its distinctive original registration number.
Discovered in an old mill in 1991, the MG subsequently underwent a comprehensive restoration, completed around 20 years ago. Importantly, two large photograph albums accompany the car and record the restoration work in considerable detail.
Today the car presents very well. The green paintwork retains an excellent shine, while the hood is in very good condition and fits well. Following its arrival with us, we have test driven the J2 and found it to run briskly, accompanied by the wonderfully characteristic exhaust note for which these early MGs are so well known.
The car is recorded on the MG Car Club Triple M Register, with chassis number J2093.
As with all our cars, this MG J2 is available for viewing and inspection at our premises in the Meon Valley, Hampshire, strictly by prior appointment.
