1934 Alvis Speed Twenty SC DHC (fitted Speed 25 Engine)
The Speed Twenty was one of the most successful pre war models. With its powerful 2.7 litre straight six engine giving a top speed of over 90 mph and the smooth all-synchromesh gear box this car is a true pre war grand tourer. A total of 289 SC models were built.
The Speed Twenty’s 2½-litre, 2.8-litre or 3½-litre engines with four main bearings were replaced in the 4.3-litre and 3½-litre Speed Twenty-Five with a strengthened new designed six-cylinder in-line unit now with seven main bearings.
For the 3½-litre version an output of 110 PS at 3,800 rpm was claimed (and proven) along with a top speed of almost 160 km/h (100 mph). It propelled the occupants at high speed in exceptional luxury accompanied by the attractive sound of a powerful deep and throaty exhaust.
The clutch, flywheel and crankshaft were balanced together, which minimised vibration. The cylinder head was of cast iron but the pistons were of aluminium. Two electric petrol pumps fed the three SU carburettors.
Offered for sale here is a particularly fine example of the Speed 20 DHC which has the benefit of a Speed 25 3.5 litre engine. Manufactured in 1934 and delivered to Charles Follet of London. It was fitted with Vanden Plas 3 position DHC coachwork, which was amongst the most elegant of its period.
In the hands of the present custodian for the past 13 years this car was restored to a very high standard some years before and remains in impeccable order. Extensive work and maintenance has been carried out in recent years which has included gearbox overhaul by Red Triangle and fitment of an overdrive unit which enables effortless long distance cruising. The list of work carried out recently is too extensive to list here so prospective purchasers are invited to call for more information.
In all a highly desirable post Vintage Alvis ideal for the most discerning enthusiast.
