1936 Riley Adelphi - present owner 55 years
The Adelphi was introduced late in 1935 for the ’36 season as the replacement for the former Stelvio model. A stylish 5 seater saloon, it was available with two choices of engine – 15 hp 6 cylinder, or the popular 12 hp 4 cylinder unit.
This 12/4 Adelphi is smartly finished in Ivory over Black with tan leather interior trim. It was acquired by the present owner in 1964 who purchased it from its second owner. The car was used for a while before being laid up for around 20 years at which point an extensive restoration was embarked upon.
In more recent times the radiator was rebuilt by Guildford Radiators and a new fuel tank was fabricated. The engine underwent major work by John Kirby of Croydon and an electric cooling fan was installed. The car has been carefully maintained to ensure reliability and is reluctantly being offered for sale due to the vendors advancing years.
Adelphi Saloons are now something of a rarity as so many have fallen victim to special builders in recent years.
This represents an opportunity to acquire a practical, comfortable and eminently useable Coventry Riley with low ownership and extensive history.
The car runs very well and the pre-selector gearbox changes well. The car has a working sunshine roof and recently retrimmed leather seats to the front. The rear seats remain original and presentable. The car has its original Surrey registration number.
