The Riley 12/4 Lynx has always been a desirable and sought after model, both
in its heyday and in modern times. For the 1936 and ’37 seasons and the
early part of 1938, it was available with a road-going version of the high
performance engine from the TT wining Sprite model, which made for a potent
4 seater sporting tourer capable of almost 85mph, ideal for the enthusiastic
motorist who required a car with family accommodation.

As Riley’s production records were destroyed, it is uncertain exactly how
many Lynx Sprites were built, so the model has always been a comparative
rarity. As a result, many ‘standard’ Lynxes have been uprated, but a genuine
Lynx Sprite can be identified by the ‘SS’ chassis number prefix.

Offered here is a truly fine example with a particularly interesting
history. The first owner competed in the 1937 Torquay and Welsh rallies,
being an enthusiastic motorist of the day. Included are further period
reports and photos of ownership history from new. A buff continuation log
book dating from 1946 shows the name of the supplying dealer and the second
long term owner – a Mr. H.K Bevan. Following Mr. Bevan’s death, the car was
to remain off the road for many years until it was rebuilt from the chassis
up between 1989 – 92 by well known Riley specialists Blue Diamond Services.

Work included the fitment of a post war RM series crown wheel and pinion to
give more relaxed cruising. And there are receipts on file totalling almost
£36,000 over and above the restoration cost for maintenance and improvements
during that time, which included an aluminium alloy clutch cover, spin-off
oil filter conversion and fitment of a four branch exhaust manifold. During
1999 Sprite Guru Gordon Middleton rebuilt the pre-selector gearbox, linkages
and clutch. He also fitted new half shafts and hubs at the same time.

During 2013/2014 Blue Diamond carried out a full engine rebuild including
several modifications - all details on file costing some £14,000. The engine
now develops some 75bhp and the car is quite simply the best 12/4 Lynx I
have driven with precise steering and handling and excellent braking
ability. The carbs have been rebuilt as has the water pump and since the
rebuild almost 2,000 miles have been covered so the car is now nicely run in
and is an absolute joy to drive.
