1949 MG YT Four Seat Tourer - £30,000 Invested

The MG YT is one of the rarest post-war MG production models and offers something quite different from the more familiar T-Series sports cars. Combining open touring motoring with genuine four-seat practicality, it remains one of the most usable and enjoyable MGs of its era.

Only 877 examples were produced between 1948 and 1950, with many exported when new. Consequently, relatively few right-hand drive examples remain in the UK today.

Affectionately known as “Limoncello”, this particular YT was first registered in July 1949 and benefits from a substantial history file together with a major restoration undertaken during the late 1990s. More recently, in excess of £30,000 has been invested in the car, creating a notably well-sorted and highly usable example.

Work has included an engine rebore and recondition, modification for unleaded fuel, new brake drums, rear springs, clutch, voltage regulator and dynamo. The radiator has been re-cored, while a stainless-steel exhaust, upgraded fuel system with new tank, fuel pump and carburettors help ensure reliable modern touring. Further improvements include electronic ignition and a spin-on oil filter conversion.

The cosmetic condition has also benefitted from significant expenditure, including a full respray, refreshed upholstery, new carpets and selective rechroming.

The car is supplied with a very good hood, side screens and a new tonneau cover and has been carefully maintained and stored in a heated, dehumidified environment.

The Y Series holds an important place in MG history, being the first production MG to feature independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. The YT Tourer also benefited from the more sporting MG TC engine specification, providing noticeably improved performance over the saloon model and making it a capable and enjoyable touring car.

Presented today as a smart, well-maintained and extensively improved example, “Limoncello” is ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian.

The car also benefits from an MOT certificate valid until 22 March 2027.
