Alec Issigonis’ miniature marvel made its debut in August 1959 in two forms, the Morris Mini-Minor and Austin Seven, the latter name paying homage to Austin’s legendary pre-war model.
John Cooper, founder of the Cooper Car Company and a highly successful Formula One constructor, quickly recognised the competition potential of Issigonis’ revolutionary little car. Following development and testing, the Austin and Morris Mini Cooper models were launched in 1961, with the more powerful Cooper ‘S’ following in 1963.
Initially offered with the 1071cc version of BMC’s A-Series engine, further 970cc and 1275cc variants followed in 1964. The 1275 Cooper S would become the best known and most desirable of the breed, its combination of remarkable handling and performance helping to establish the Mini’s legendary competition reputation, including its celebrated successes on the Monte Carlo Rally.
Just arrived at The Garage is this very appealing 1965 Austin Mini Cooper S 1275 Mk1, finished in Almond Green with an Old English White roof and green and grey trim.
Restored to a high standard during the late 1990s, the car remains in particularly good order today. A substantial history file containing numerous invoices records the restoration work undertaken at the time and indicates that this was a comprehensive and carefully executed rebuild.
Importantly, the car retains its original 1275cc engine, which was fully rebuilt approximately 9,000 miles ago. The chassis and engine numbers correspond with the accompanying BMIHT Heritage Certificate.
The bodywork presents extremely well, with good, even paintwork and particular attention having been paid during restoration to those areas of the Mini bodyshell which can so often give cause for concern. The underside is finished in body colour, while the suspension and braking components were also attended to as part of the restoration.
Inside, the car is fitted with period-style bucket seats trimmed to complement the green and grey interior. Pleasingly, the original seats have been retained and will accompany the car.
The Cooper S sits on Rose Petal alloy wheels fitted with Yokohama tyres and benefits from a number of sensible and sympathetic upgrades. These include an RC40 single-box exhaust with LCB free-flow manifold, Koni shock absorbers, adjustable tie rods and Minifin rear brake drums.
Its BMIHT Heritage Certificate confirms that the car was originally supplied new to Lincolnshire, and it appears to have remained in the Lincolnshire/Suffolk area for much of its life. Particularly pleasing is the retention of its original registration number, together with the original green logbook and current V5C registration document.
A very well-presented and properly sorted example of the highly desirable Mk1 Cooper S 1275, retaining its original engine and benefiting from a well-documented restoration, extensive history and carefully chosen mechanical improvements.
